Mountain Mission School

In Grundy, Virginia

In its 86 years in operation, Mountain Mission School has provided a residence, academic environment, and Christian education for over 20,000 children in need from across the United States.

Mountain Mission School – Five years ago Saint Matthew’s started its Love Box ministry at Mountain Mission School (MMS) in Grundy, VA, providing no fewer than 200 boxes each year.  MMS, in far southwest Virginia, has provided a home, education, and spiritual guidance to children for the past 87 years.  What started on a farm with six local children now houses over 200 children of poverty, neglect, or abuse.  MMS ministers to the whole child- body, mind, and spirit.  The Love Boxes are recycled shoe boxes, wrapped in Christmas paper and filled with small presents that are presented to the children as stockings on Christmas morning.  Boxes generally contain a game, hat, scarf, mittens, personal hygiene items, and candy.  In 2008, Saint Matthew’s delivered 225 Love Boxes to MMS, along with additional gifts too large for a shoe box.

Student Sponsor - Saint Matthew’s also sponsors one of the students at MMS. Children are encouraged to stay connected with their own families. However, since some of these children are from homes of poverty, a church may sponsor a child to provide allowance, school pictures, year book, birthday and Christmas presents, as well as holiday cards throughout the year.  In exchange the student writes letters of “Thanks” back to the sponsoring church.  Saint Matthew’s started sponsoring a 14 year-old girl in 2005. She is now a junior in high school, at age 17. We send her $480.00 in allowance and about $200.00 worth of gifts each year.
